The elephant-headed Hindu god Ganesh, or Lord Ganesha, is called the Remover of Obstacles. His name means “Lord of the People.” He was the child of the god and goddess Shiva and Parvati.
It is common to see Ganesh positioned at temple entrances because of the story of how he got his elephant head. The legend says that Pavarti grew lonely while Lord Shiva was away so she crafted a son and brought him to life. On the night Lord Shiva returned, Parvati was bathing and wanted to be left alone, so she asked Ganesh to guard the door. When Ganesh refused to let Shiva through, Shiva cut off his head. Parvati was devastated and Shiva promised her to bring back the first head he could find, which happened to be an elephant. They attached the elephant head to their child’s body and he was celebrated for the loyalty and bravery he showed while guarding the door.
There are many different stories about why Ganesh has a broken tusk, but the symbolism is transcendence and non-duality. It represents wisdom over emotions and that everything is equal and connected. Call on Ganesh when you are starting a new journey to clear your path, especially in business endeavors. Put him at the doorway of your business or office to bring good fortune. He is also the patron god of travel.
