Hyssop, meaning holy herb, is a member of the mint family and is commonly used to cleanse and purify sacred spaces, ritual tools, and the self. Used since ancient times as a sacred herb, Hyssop is often hung at entrances to prevent sickness. Hyssop is also used in magick for uncrossing work and the removal of negative energy. In Psalm 51, David says, "Purge me with hyssop and I shall be clean." Use Hyssop in a ritual bath or prepare an herbal oil or spray to cleanse and purify prior to ritual, prayer, or spell work.
USES: Herbal preparations, burn in a loose incense blend, add to floor washes, ritual baths, use to dress spell candles, stuff poppets, or as a casting herb.
Medicinally, Hyssop is a natural antiseptic, expectorant, stimulant, and diaphoretic. Hyssop is often used in herbal teas for the relief of sore throats and common colds. As a compress, Hyssop is used to cleanse minor cuts and scraps. As an herbal oil, Hyssop is used for the removal of head lice.
